newSTART works with women who want to obtain financial independence to support themselves and their families. As part of WorkBC we provide ongoing individualized support to prepare women for employment and/or educational opportunities through workshops, case management and appropriate community based supports to ensure positive changes.

Self-Awareness and Personal Supports
In one-on-one sessions and group workshops you will have the opportunity to discuss issues that affect your life as well as identify and address your unique needs and challenges
  • Development of an Action Plan based on your identified needs and goals
  • Learn to be assertive and set appropriate personal boundaries
  • Recognize your strengths and abilities, increase your self-awareness through group activities, workshops and work experience placement
  • Learn to recognize, understand and overcome the impact of abuse that may prevent you from moving forward
  • Identify opportunities develop new communication skills, manage stress and anger while building positive relationships
  • Identify your needs and successfully connect with community support services for you and your family
  • Learn how to successfully plan, set goals and make constructive changes through critical thinking techniques and developing positive attitudes
Employment Related Skills
You will develop the skills needed to create new employment opportunities and obtain work that matters to you
  • Research new career options using self-assessments and online Labour Market Research
  • Learn to identify your own skills and capabilities transferable to new job opportunities
  • Gain access to possible employment opportunities through community based employment fairs
  • Learn to successfully prepare self-marketing tools such as resumes and cover letters
  • Identify important employment skills through time management, job retention, and workplace communication workshops
  • Develop job interview skills in group workshops and one-on-one interview preparation and interview follow-up activities
  • Learn to develop networking skills to gain access to the hidden job market
  • Learn how to successfully apply online for job postings
Unpaid Work Experience Placement
newSTART staff will encourage you and support you in seeking a meaningful work experience placement in an area of real interest to you
  • Gain hands-on experience through an unpaid work placement
  • Learn to evaluate and assess possible future career options
  • Acquire additional skills and hands-on experience to add to your resume
  • Obtain positive reference and possible future job opportunities
Essential Skills Supports
newSTART provides a variety of individualized supports and assistance while attending the program
  • Financial support for post-secondary assessments and service fees
  • Assisting you in planning, preparing for registering for educational upgrading, training and post-secondary educational opportunities
  • Support in planning, preparing for registering for ESL upgrading
  • Computer skills for accessing online job search, employment, Service Canada and MSDSI applications
Occupational Related Certificates
newSTART will provide financial support for employment related certificates
  • WorkSafe BC First Aid and CPR
  • WorldHost BC Ministry of Tourism
  • FoodSafe Level I
  • Serving It Right
  • WHMIS
  • CPIC Application (Criminal Record Check with the BC Attorney General and/or Local Police)
